In Baldur's Gate 3, encountering the Orthon Yurgir inside the Gauntlet of Shar presents one of the most intense dialogue encounters in Act 2. Players can completely bypass a grueling combat encounter against Yurgir and his minions by leveraging keen perception and persuasive dialogue options. Mastering these specific skill checks allows your party to fulfill Raphael's contract efficiently while saving vital combat resources.

Initiating the Negotiation with Yurgir

To begin the conversation without triggering immediate hostility, approach Yurgir cautiously from the main path. Choose peaceful options like asking him to lower his weapon so you can talk. Mentioning Raphael and offering to share experiences regarding the devil will open the door for further dialogue.

As Yurgir recites the terms of his contract, your character must pass a passive Insight check to spot a crucial loophole. Recognizing that Raphael's contract requires anyone who hears the song to die provides the leverage needed to manipulate the Orthon. Skipping this Insight check will prevent the necessary dialogue branches from appearing.

Convincing Yurgir to Eliminate His Minions

Once the contract loophole is identified, point out to Yurgir that his loyal Merregon followers have heard the lyrics. A successful Persuasion check will convince him that his army poses an obstacle to his freedom. Driven by desperation, Yurgir will immediately command his Merregons to destroy themselves.

After the Merregons are gone, direct Yurgir's attention toward his beloved Displacer Beast, Nessa. A second Persuasion roll allows you to argue that she also heard the song and must be eliminated. Yurgir will then dispatch the beast, leaving himself entirely isolated.

The Final Persuasion Check for Self-Elimination

With all his allies destroyed, remind Yurgir that he too has continuously heard the contract's song. Pointing out this ultimate paradox forces him to realize that his own existence prevents the completion of the pact. This leads to a final high-DC Persuasion check to convince him to take his own life.

Succeeding in this final dice roll causes Yurgir to end his life, freeing him to return to the House of Hope in the Avernus realm. This clever diplomatic route grants your party full experience points and fulfills Raphael's questline without enduring a punishing fight.
